Marvel Comics is celebrating the second year of its new Ultimate Universe with a series of special connecting variant covers. Josemaria Casanovas illustrates the epic scene, which begins releasing this week with Ultimate X-Men #8.
The variant covers will span Marvel's currently running issues set in the Ultimate Universe, including Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto's Ultimate Spider-Man, Bryan Hill and Stefano Caselli's Ultimate Black Panther, Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri's Ultimates, Peach Momoko's Ultimate X-Men, and the newly announced Ultimate Wolverine by Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio. The special year-ending one-shot story Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1 will also be included in the set. Marvel revealed the full connecting cover art, which pays homage to Jim Lee's iconic 1991 X-Men #1 cover.

Casanovas' connecting cover teases upcoming storylines and characters that fans will be able to see appear in future issues set in the Ultimate Universe, including the long-awaited return of the Maker, Reed Richards. In the Ultimate Universe, the Maker was the leader of The Fantastic Four before focusing his scientific intelligence on larger ambitions, including his desire to "remake the world." Other characters that can be seen in the connecting covers include Thor, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Magik and Colossus.

Wolverine Joins the Ultimate Universe With a Surprising Twist
Marvel's new Ultimate Universe imprint began in 2023, reimagining several classic Marvel characters in their own Ultimate continuity. Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch's Ultimate Invasion limited series saw the Maker creating Earth-6160, which is where the titles in the Ultimate Universe take place. Since its launch, several new characters have received ongoing series exploring the universe, with the X-Men's Wolverine set to join the universe in January. Marvel announced the Ultimate Wolverine story at this year's New York Comic Con and teased a deadly new role for the beloved hero.

Ultimate Universe: One Year In will set the stage for future stories in the Ultimate Universe when it releases this December, and Marvel has already shared that it will mark the first appearance of Ultimate Wolverine. The one-shot sees the Maker's Council launch a bold plan to rid the world of the heroes who have risen in power, and it will also introduce another major Marvel character's Ultimate version. In the Ultimate Wolverine series, the Maker wipes Wolverine's mind and turns him into a deadly assassin, hinting at an even darker story led by writer Chris Condon.
