Marvel Finally Confirms the Truth About a Fantastic Four Mystery

Reflecting on the introduction of an alternate version of the Silver Surfer in the MCU hit The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel is fleshing out the backstory of a supporting character who has moved into the mainstream.

The latest big-screen iteration of Marvel’s First Family took a major leap by giving fans the most faithful version of the world-devouring superpower, Galactus. The film also gave us one of the most enigmatic characters in the comics: the spacefaring Silver Surfer, although in the MCU multiverse it’s Shalla Bal, portrayed by Julia Garner, who visits Earth to herald its fate.

Some fans felt cheated that the Silver Surfer's return to the cinematic world wasn’t Norrin Radd, who debuted in the classic Fantastic Four #48 (1966). There were still many others who didn’t see the connection between Radd and Shalla Bal, or that, in an alternate reality, Shalla Bal assumed the mantle. Shalla is among one of the reasons that Norrin Radd makes the sacrifice to become the herald of Galactus.

Though she was depicted as little more than Norrin Radd’s love interest, Shalla Bal’s profile grows over the course of her history in the comic book storyline. It’s no surprise that Marvel Comics has decided to flesh out the origins of the controversial figure who has captured all of our attention in the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Foes — Shalla Bal #1.

Written by Charles Soule and with iconic art by Mark Buckingham, the MCU tie-in series will undoubtedly help to provide more of the much-anticipated backstory of scientific astronomer Shalla Bal and the sacrifice she made; the family and friends she left behind to seek out Earth-828 for her master, Galactus, in the events leading up to The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

In the Marvel mainstream universe where Earth-616 exists, Bal is very much in love with Norrin Radd, and when he is exiled to Earth after defying Galactus, she is forced to continue without him. Their fates cross again, but only briefly, and she is even made empress of their home world, Zenn-La. Although the comic book is a tie-in to the MCU universe, it will still reveal more about Bal than was previously known.

A Silver Surfer Still By Any Other Name

The reported outrage from audiences at the character reversal in The Fantastic Four: First Steps was unbelievably misguided and revealed just how little some moviegoers knew about the core books. Shalla Bal wasn’t a random character and opens the possibility that in the MCU’s prime universe there might be a Norrin Radd as the Silver Surfer.

In the meantime, the upcoming book by Soule and Buckingham will offer more insight into this provocative figure, who challenges one of the most powerful beings in any multiverse. It’s a potent direction for Marvel Comics to dedicate a comic book to tie in with the cinematic universe, giving audiences more to look forward to, especially as the clock ticks closer to Avengers: Doomsday this December.
