During the long wait for Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel is slowly teasing fans with exciting new stories. Now, the publisher is teasing an unbelievable new leader as the Avengers prepare to enter their own new era.

Later this year, one month before Avengers: Doomsday heads to theaters, Marvel will relaunch its main Avengers series in the wake of its new Armageddon event. The new series will debut with a new logo and a new team, and Marvel has finally given fans a glimpse of who the leader might actually be. This month's Captain America #13, also written by new Avengers scribe Chip Zdarsky, foreshadows Spider-Man eventually becoming the leader of Marvel's new group of superheroes.

Is Spider-Man Ready to Lead the Avengers In Marvel's New Series?

Captain America #13 was released on July 15 as a tie-in to the dark new Armageddon event, and it sees Spider-Man having a heartbreaking moment with Captain America that feels like a massive teaser of what is to come. After Steve is left in a coma after the Red Hulk bests him in battle, Peter Parker visits him in the hospital.

"Everyone's mad. Angry about what that Red Hulk did to you," Spider-Man laments to Cap. "And now a who's who of heroes are headed to Europe to kick his butt." But Spider-Man stays behind, and he also grapples with his feelings of doubt when it comes to taking on the mantle of being an Avenger.

"I told Tony I wouldn't join them, that I'd stay behind to protect New York. Going global just — it feels too above my pay grade, you know?" Spider-Man laments. "But was that wrong? Don't I have a responsibility to — to keep an eye on things? To step in if our guys go too far?"

Spider-Man's self-reflection feels like it might be just the catalyst he needs to eventually break free and become one of the Avengers' leaders. It may sound unlikely, but Marvel has already begun teasing its new Avengers team, and Spider-Man is confirmed to be in the lineup.

The new Avengers series drops on Nov. 4, and it will deal with the aftermath of Armageddon — when the Marvel Universe has lost all order. "A new group of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes finds themselves united to avenge the Marvel Universe," the publisher teased. "Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and an all-new hero set to make their explosive debut soon!"

Zdarsky previously teased about his ambitions for the Avengers book, and reading his statements makes it seem even more likely that Spider-Man might end up being the team's natural leader. "Avengers is a book that should lead the Marvel Universe, where big things happen, and surprises keep hitting," Zdarsky shared. "That's what Marco and I are doing with every issue, and I can’t wait for people to fall in love with these gorgeous pages."

As Spider-Man appears poised to step into an exciting new role in the Marvel Universe, his fate in the MCU is much more uncertain. Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31 as part of Phase Six of the MCU, and it will likely deliver some answers about where Tom Holland's Spider-Man will be headed in the future.

For now, Holland has been noticeably absent from all teasers and cast reveals surrounding Avengers: Doomsday. Spider-Man's MCU counterpart may not be ready to step up to the plate for a cosmic-level threat like Doctor Doom just yet, but he certainly seems ready to take the lead as Armageddon takes hold on the print side of the Marvel Universe.

Captain America #13 is on sale now, and Avengers #1 will be released on Nov. 4.
