The following contains major spoilers for New Champions #2, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
The latest member of the New Champions might not be canon, but he's given Marvel Comics collectors a reason to remember him.
New Champions #2 picks up shortly after the previous issue left off, with the team having been suddenly dragged through a portal to a small island off the coast of Norway. There, they are besieged by all manner of supernatural threats, although they aren't alone in their fight. As it turns out, the New Champions are just a handful of a whole host of teenage superheroes who have found themselves in the middle of the same fight, and Deadpool Boy is more than happy to remind collectors everywhere just how valuable a first appearance can be.

For readers who might be unfamiliar, the world of comic book collecting is largely dominated by the hunt for "key issues." While there are plenty of collectors who focus on rare or highly-sought variant covers, the vast majority look for issues that mark a major milestone. Any given comic book can be considered a key issue for a variety of reasons, although the reason that most are familiar with is the introduction of a brand-new character, of which New Champions #2 contains three including that of the potentially non-canon Deadpool Boy.
While New Champions is the beginning of the team's story together, it is not the first time that many of its members have fought alongside one another. Apart from several cameos in the form of various visions of the future, the core members of the New Champions were properly introduced in 2024's Spider-Woman #7 by Steve Foxe and Ig Guara as members of The Assembly. This band of teenage superheroes were purportedly patrolling the streets of San Francisco at the behest of a benevolent corporate entity. Soon enough, it was discovered that they had all been stolen away from their families as part of a complex Hydra operation.

Among those core members of the New Champions are Emilio Gallardo, aka Cadet Marvel, Miranda Monteiro, aka Liberty, Jaren Johnson, aka Moon Squire, and the enigmatic young Master of the Mystic Arts known only as Hellrune.
