The fighting game world is abuzz with the recent announcement from Arc System Works that they are working on a new Marvel fighting game, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls!
Arc System Works is known for some of the best modern fighting games around with the Guilty Gear series, BlazBlue, and probably my favorite Dragon Ball fighting game, Dragon Ball FighterZ. These games revolutionized the tag fighting system made famous by the Marvel Vs Capcom series, and Arc System Works continues that evolution with Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
Lead Battle Designer, Katzuo Sekine, said this about the new, and unheard of, 4 on 4 fighting mechanics for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls in their PlayStation announcement:
“Team VS fighting games have a long tradition of 2v2 or 3v3 team formats, so this is something we discussed in-depth within the development team. We went back and forth many times, from thinking we might be better off making a 1v1 game or sticking to the established 3v3 format.”
“Sekine-san continues, “At its core, we felt that the appeal of team VS fighting games is the intensity of battles with multiple characters on screen at once. Additionally, one of the appeals of Marvel comics is seeing the vast cast of characters coming together to create all kinds of unique team-ups.”
“With these two ideas in mind, we concluded that creating a 4v4 team VS system would be the best way to not only create those over-the-top moments, but to further evolve the tag fighting genre.”
The trailer Arc System Works released blew seasoned fighting game players away and many are praying they live till 2026 when Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is set to be released. And can you blame them?
The trailer only showcased 8 characters, but Arc System Works is known for a robust number of playable characters. Guilty Gear Strive boasts 28 playable characters, while, after you count all the DLCs, Dragon Ball FighterZ has an insane 44 playable characters in total. This has many fighting game professionals speculating on which Marvel characters will be involved in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
With hero-shooter Marvel Rivals still drawing big player numbers, it’s possible Marvel will have two giant franchises dominating video game charts. DC better get on the ball as they trail Marvel pivoting towards the videogame market again.
YellowFlash says it looks like “Japan has solved the Ms. Marvel problem.”
