Massive Indies, a subdistribution program run by Massive Publishing, has announced its first two publishers: Heavy Metal and Devil’s Due.
Massive is distributed directly by Lunar Distribution, but is offering the Massive Indies program to offer smaller publishers in a consolidated part of the catalog. Both Heavy Metal and DEvil’s Due offer material by high quality creators – but have very small lines which Lunar would have a hard time picking up, so this plan seemingly makes sense for all concerned.
Heavy Metal and Massive have some history, as Massive’s CEO Michael Calero explained. “A few years back, Heavy Metal partnered with Massive to release the historic final issue of Volume One of the magazine. Now, It’s thrilling to be a part of the magazine’s rebirth, working with both Heavy Metal and Lunar to get these books onto comic shop shelves and ultimately into the hands of excited fans.”
Heavy Metal has a long history of its own but most recently relaunched with a Kickstarter for a new #1 of its fabled magazine, a 240-page giant sized edition, which raised $800,000. The issue will go out to comics shops as part of Massive Indies. The issue includes work by Greg Hildebrandt and Frank Frazetta (pictured below), Tula Lotay, Keron Grant, Janevsky, and David Palumbo, Enki Bilal, Craig Wilson, Sergio Gerasi, Michael Conrad, Leah Moore, John Reppion, Anna Morozova, Antonio Segura, David Quinn, Joseph Michael Linsner, Keron Grant, Jose Ortiz, Fernando Dagnino, Tim Vigil, Paul Kirchner, John Workman, and Jim Rugg.
But the deal gets a wee bit more complicated than just joining Massive Indies: Massive Select, another branch of Massive that makes collectibles, will have its own variant edition of the new Heavy Metal, with a cover by Walking Dead co-creator Tony Moore tributing a classic HM cover of the past.
Devil’s Due is another publisher with a long history under publisher Josh Blaylock. Current offerings include The Disavowed, written by Blaylock and illustrated by Pop Mhan, with covers by Michael Golden, Tim Seeley, Dave Johnson and more. Logline: “ “G.I.JOE meets The Boys.” This series is also being crowdfunded with an upcoming campaign for a “Pilot Edition.”
Mercy Sparx #1 Sweet 16 Anniversary Edition and the guidebook Breaking Into Comics: No More Rules are two more Devil’s Due publications that will be available via Lunar.
