The latest throwback one-shot has just pitted Nick Fury against Marvel's original space dragon.
Nick Fury vs. Fin Fang Foom #1 brings readers back to 1940, just prior to the United States officially joining the fight during the Second World War. After being recruited to investigate a string of attacks on privately contracted fighter pilots, Fury and his Howling Commandos find themselves searching for answers in the snowy mountains of China. Fortunately for Fury, all it takes is a single reconnaisance flight to uncover the source of the attacks, although the fact that it is the dragon Fin Fang Foom behind them doesn't make things any better.

Introduced in Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby's opening story from 1961's Strange Tales #89, "Fin Fang Foom Part 2," the towering, dragon-like being known as Fin Fang Foom is in fact a Makluan, a shape-shifting alien from the far-off world of Kakaranthara, or Maklu IV. Hundreds of years ago, Fin Fang Foom and a handful of his fellow Makluans took to the stars in search of various worlds to conquer. When they arrived on Earth, Fin Fang Foom decided to enter a deep, centuries-long slumber to serve as a backup of sorts while the rest of his crew assumed terrestrial forms and embedded themselves in human society.
In the years since his debut, Fin Fang Foom has been at the center of multiple storylines and confronted a multitude of Marvel Comics heroes. While Fin Fang Foom has never truly defeated the likes of the Fantastic Four or the Incredible Hulk, he has always maintained his position as one of the biggest threats that the Marvel Universe has to offer. That being said, Fin Fang Foom is by no means a decidedly evil figure, as he has fought alongside the likes of Doctor Strange on occasion.
