There’s been a lot of speculation recently about Matt Reeves’ involvement in The Batman: Part II. Some reports suggested that he may have stepped down as director but will remain involved as a scriptwriter. However, other sources indicated that he is still attached to direct the film.
James Gunn stepped back into the fray to answer fan questions on social media, and confirmed that Matt Reeves is still attached to direct The Batman Part II. While not surprising, this debunked those claims/speculation that the filmmaker had walked away from the sequel.

The source of the speculation was a post that showed when the film was slated to go into production and Reeves’ name is not listed as the director. But the counter to the rumor was that a previous posting for the film before it was delayed also didn’t have a director listed. James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios and who often debunks speculation quickly, has yet to comment on this report.
Internet leaker Jeff Sneider responded to Gunn’s debunk stating, “The signs that I’m getting is that the next Batman movie won’t be The Batman 2 … Like, the next time you see Batman – it’ll be in like a ‘World’s Finest’ movie or something […] That is probably what [Gunn] is working on right now.”
“If he is not writing a direct sequel to Superman, then it’s got to be something that incorporates Superman and Batman,” Sneider mused, suggesting Gunn might be following the DCEU blueprint (Man of Steel was followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice).
Gunn has not debunked this claim at this time. In the meantime, The Batman: Part II is currently aiming for a March 2026 shoot, with a revised release date of October 1, 2027.
