Sonic the Hedgehog is on the run for his life when one of his most dangerous adversaries gets leveled up and has never been more dangerous, pulling out all the stops for the 35th Anniversary celebration.
It's been a great 35 years, and from the looks of it, Super Sonic may have finally met his match. Whether these latest upgrades meet the demands of the moment is to be seen, but the excitement building around the 35th Anniversary Special has fans eager to jump on board. IDW Publishing is not shying away from the promotion surrounding this epic showdown.

No one has been more focused than the diabolical Dr. Eggman, who went the distance to create an evil twin, Metal Sonic, to take down the Blue Blur. In IDW Publishing’s Sonic the Hedgehog: 35th Anniversary Special, Eggman’s diabolical doppelgänger is getting a serious upgrade.
When a mysterious meteorite crashes on Sonic’s world, Dr. Eggman recovers an alien object and immediately goes to work to use the artifact to enhance Metal Sonic’s already formidable capabilities. Now a weapon of mass destruction, Eggman is determined to unleash Metal Sonic on his foe and finally achieve his goal of total world domination.
Using the power of the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic is able to level up to Super Sonic. When locked in battle with his evil twin, Metal Sonic reveals it can also transform and uses the energies within the artifact to rattle Sonic. Along with the all-new, all-different appearance, Metal Sonic has also revealed a surprisingly new power set: a series of tendrils it can use to ensnare and entangle its adversary.
Dr. Eggman has upgraded Metal Sonic’s systems before, enhancing the automaton and even going the distance to mass-produce his creation into a rallying strike force, but they’ve never compared with the sophisticated systems apparent in the origin. Making Metal Sonic one of the deadliest foes Sonic has ever had to confront.
Sonic May Not Be Able to Outrun This Adversary

If this is Sonic’s last stand, all that we can say is it’s been a great run, but it might be too soon to count him out. With his popularity showing no signs of losing steam, Sonic the Hedgehog has exceeded pop culture expectations and remains just as relevant as ever. Metal Sonic may be flexing some muscles, but let’s root for the hero to save the day.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 35 years since Sonic the Hedgehog debuted, immediately emerging as a major star in the gaming world. The platform game engineered by the video game maestros at SEGA couldn’t have imagined how popular the little speedster would become, or how much his in-world existence would expand into more games and across media, including movies and comic books.
