Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Confirm New Villain Before Green Ranger's Return

He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

If there is one character who best deserves to be called the single most definitive hero of the Power Rangers franchise, it would have to be Tommy Oliver. Anyone who ever considered themselves a fan of this phenomenon was green with envy the moment Jason David Frank joined the cast of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as the famed Green Ranger.

Of course, as fans should recall, Tommy started off as a villain before accepting his destiny as a trusted member of the team of young, costumed defenders of Angel Grove. Speaking of villains, the hero has a new enemy to face off against in the upcoming comic book, Power Rangers: Green.

Power Rangers: Green #2 Introduces The Red Censer

The official solicitation for Power Rangers: Green #2 was recently released, even before the series' premiere issue was scheduled to come out. It provides deeper insight into what there is to expect from Tommy Oliver's latest adventure, most notably the deadly threat he will face.

The second chapter of Power Rangers: Green will introduce a villain called the Red Censer, which sounds like a perfectly on-brand name for the type of enemy that a Power Ranger would be forced to take on. While there is still not much known about the antagonist from the solicitation, a variant cover reveals that it is a spider-like creature that emits red lasers from its eyes.

The image, which sees Tommy and the new "ragtag crew" he has allied himself with struggling to evade the Red Censer in a new take on his vehicle called a "zord," comes courtesy of Gustaffo Vargas. The Peruvian artist, additionally known as one of the creators behind Image Comics' hit cyberpunk series Nullhunter, also serves as the main illustrator for Power Rangers: Green.

The new series is written by Paul Allor, who is already a veteran of Boom! Studios' run of Power Rangers comics. They are also known for writing many titles exclusive to Marvel Unlimited, including Avengers United and Marvel Rivals.

Tommy Oliver Returns In Power Rangers: Green

Power Rangers: Green is poised to be an absolute must-read for longtime fans of the franchise and, especially, of the character of Tommy Oliver. The comic will serve as the fan-favorite hero's first solo adventure, a fact that is also reflected by the five-issue limited series' tragic twist.

Similar to the 2015 fan-made short film Power/Rangers, the story takes place in a dystopian future, but in which Tommy is the last remaining Ranger alive and he has opted to put his life fighting evil behind him in favor of a quiet, solitary existence. However, his plans change when an encounter with a stranger forces him to rediscover his identity as the Green Ranger.

A sneak peek at Power Rangers: Green #2 also confirms that another familiar face appears in the comic, in the form of Alpha 5. Zordon's robotic assistant, known for his signature catchphrase "Ai yi yi," was a staple of the original series that started it all, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, an Americanized revamp of the Japanese fantasy action program Super Sentai, which debuted in 1993.

Tommy Oliver, who eventually became the leading White Ranger on the original series and took on other colors in subsequent iterations, was played by Jason David Frank. The actor and martial artist tragically took his own life in 2022, but gives his final performance in the film, Legend of the White Dragon, which releases on Aug. 28, 2026.

Power Rangers: Green #1 hits the shelves on Aug. 5, 2026, and Power Rangers: Green #2 is due on Sept. 16.
