The race to become the next James Bond has kept fans guessing for years, and now a new name is making waves. British actor Callum Turner, known for his roles in Fantastic Beasts and The Capture, has been rumored to be the next 007 in Amazon MGM Studios’ reboot of the legendary spy franchise. But is he really in the running?
At the Berlin Film Festival, Turner faced the question head-on when a reporter tried to “get it out of the way.” His answer was brief but revealing: “You’re right, it’s very early for that question. I’m not going to comment on it.” That was enough to fuel headlines across social media, but not enough to confirm anything. His co-star in the new film Rosebush Pruning, Tracy Letts, stepped in with a joke, saying, “I’m sorry, I’m the next James Bond,” cutting off any further questions. Was that genuine deflection or just smart media play?

Every few months, new rumors emerge about who will take over from Daniel Craig, but industry insiders have made one thing clear. Amazon MGM won’t begin casting until the script for the next Bond film is finalized. Reports suggest the official announcement won’t come for several more months. Director Denis Villeneuve has reportedly pushed for a Bond who fits the story rather than the brand, hinting that the studio might step away from predictable typecasting.
Another sign points to a change in direction. Studio sources told reporters that the next Bond “will probably not be a huge star.” If that’s true, it could move Turner closer to the top of the list, ahead of more famous names like Henry Cavill or Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Turner, 35, fits the mold of a fresh but experienced actor who could hold the role for the next decade without being overshadowed by his fame.
Turner’s resume has been steadily growing. He played Theseus Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts series, earned a BAFTA nomination for The Capture, and starred in The Boys in the Boat and Masters of the Air. His recent fantasy rom-com Eternity and his upcoming leading role in Apple TV’s adaptation of Neuromancer have solidified his presence in Hollywood without turning him into a household name. Could that be exactly what Amazon MGM wants—a talented, steady actor rather than an A-list celebrity?
There’s only one question fans can’t help but ask: will the next Bond be a surprise pick who represents a new era for the franchise, or will the studio play it safe with a familiar face? Turner isn’t saying, and neither is Amazon MGM. But one thing’s for sure—the hunt for 007 has become almost as dramatic as the spy stories themselves.
