Nathan Fillion Shares Update on that ‘Firefly’ Animated Series

Firefly may have been cut down in its prime, but the hardcore fan base never let it die. Now, more than two decades after FOX canceled the sci-fi Western, Nathan Fillion says an animated reboot is still moving forward, even if the pace is slow. When Firefly first aired in 2002, Fox put it in a Friday 8 p.m. slot and then made things worse with bad marketing and a messy episode order. Creator Joss Whedon wanted a seven-season run, but the network pulled the plug after just 11 episodes aired. The full 14-episode run later reached home media, but the show never got the fair shot many fans believe it deserved. The new project was first confirmed last March, with Fillion saying the animated series had entered development. Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau are all set to return as voice actors, and the story is expected to take place between Firefly and the 2005 film Serenity. Still, the reboot is not quite close to the finish line.
