An upcoming “Star Trek” comic book series from IDW Publishing will introduce one of the greatest threats to the United Federation of Planets: capitalism. No joke. As noted by ScreenRant, “Star Trek: Redshirts II: Ghosts of the 21st Century” by writer Gerry Duggan and artist Scott Buoncristiano has Earth’s long-time enemies the Romulans planning to destabilize the UFP by “reintroducing” capitalism to its post-scarcity socialist-like society. It takes place in the 23rd century, the era of the Original Series. According to the article, the story introduces a Section 31-ish cadre dubbed “Section Null” that is full of Romulan-friendly Federation operatives. “After studying the history of the Federation, particularly Earth, the Romulans concluded that when capitalism was the dominant economic model on the planet, humans were much weaker and more open to being conquered and manipulated. Hence, the Romulans are using Section Null to reintroduce capitalism to the Federation, destabilizing it in the process,” the article states. ScreenRant author Shaun Corley believes the Romulans are right — that Earth almost was destroyed by capitalism. But … was it? In fact, the beginning of human society...
