No Heroes: ‘Lanterns’ Trailer Sparks More Worry than Hype

1 week ago 17

When DC co-chief James Gunn first revealed his new superhero roadmap, Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, fans hoped Lanterns would finally restore honor to the Green Lantern mythos. Instead, what Warner Bros. and HBO just dropped looks like something else entirely. According to the new trailer, this isn’t a space adventure about courage and willpower. It looks more like another TV crime drama trying to wear a superhero’s mask.

The teaser for Lanterns puts actors Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler in the roles of John Stewart and Hal Jordan. But they’re not saving galaxies this time. They’re driving dusty roads in Nebraska. They meet a small-town sheriff who barks, “This is my town, and you’re a big shot, noted, but stay the f*** out of my way.” Does that sound like the legendary Green Lantern Corps or more like a knockoff version of True Detective?

Straight from Damon Lindelof’s mouth. They removed the “Green” from the title because they thought it was stupid… that tells you everything you need to know about Lanterns. #greenlantern #dcu pic.twitter.com/YRWM8Msl4A

The show’s creators brag that it’s an Earth-based mystery, while also mocking the idea of emphasizing the “GREEN” part of the hero’s powers. That means no alien planets, no Guardians, no wonder. Just two men arguing about who “does a better job” protecting people while convicts and soldiers fill in for what should be cosmic villains. At one point Stewart tells Jordan he’s trained for two months and still hasn’t worn the ring. Jordan just shrugs and says, “Don’t get hung up on the jewelry, Junior.” But isn’t that “jewelry” the very heart of what makes the Green Lantern who he is?

Another telling part; there are no wears a costume in the trailer. No green light constructs. Not even a fully seen blast from a power ring. Just tension, grit, dirt, swagger, and explosions. It’s as if the people behind Lanterns think heroism itself is something to apologize for. They’re stripping away the mythology, the legacy, the hope and calling it realism.

What’s next? Stewart scoffing that talking to alien colleagues is beneath him? That’s exactly what happens when he laughs off the idea of the Corps, saying, “I’m the only human. They’re aliens. One of them’s a f***in’ squirrel.” There it is, that James Gunn mockery that always turns epic stories into jokes. This Hollywood trend keeps repeating: take something inspiring, drain the color, make it “gritty,” and then sell it as prestige drama.

HBO wants you to believe that Lanterns is the future of the DC Universe. But if this trailer is any sign, the studio isn’t building a universe; it’s dismantling one. Remember what happened when James Gunn “reimagined” Superman? Fans were promised a fresh take, but many felt he gutted the core of the character to let others be elevated instead. Will the same thing happen here?

Maybe this show wants to send a message about masculinity or power. But if you remove everything that made the Green Lantern story heroic in the first place, what’s left to admire? Why should anyone care about a superhero who doesn’t act like one? Audiences aren’t asking for another lecture disguised as entertainment. They’re asking for adventure, courage, and light. You know, the very things the power ring once stood for.
