The following contains major spoilers for West Coast Avengers #8, on sale June 18 from Marvel Comics.
The West Coast Avengers are staring down a classic Marvel villain in what might be his scariest form of all time.
West Coast Avengers #8 (by Gerry Duggan, Danny Kim, Arthur Hesli, and VC's Joe Caramagna) picks up right in the middle of the eponymous team's battle against the latest iteration of Ultron known as the Scorched. As Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, quickly learns, the Scorched is just one of millions of individual Ultron personalities that have risen up since the version of the mechanized menace known as the One founded his strange new church. Worse still, the One might no longer be a part of the picture whatsoever, and there is no telling if any other Ultron can possibly stand up to the Scorched.

Introduced in the pages of 1968's Avengers #54 by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, Ultron is arguably the greatest of Hank Pym's creations. At least, the sentient artificial intelligence would be if not for the fact that it was for whatever reason imbued with a profoundly evil consciousness of its own shortly after being activated. In the years since Ultron first appeared, the character has undergone dozens of transformations, even eventually merging with Hank Pym in its entirety in one of the most infamous storylines in modern Marvel Comics history.
At the outset of the latest West Coast Avengers run, Ultron was reintroduced in the surprisingly benevolent form of the One. This new Ultron decided to reach out to people with otherwise terminal illnesses and conditions, offering them a chance to live on forever as part of the cybernetically enhanced Church of Ultron. While this posed a unique kind of problem that the eponymous heroes had never imagined, the West Coast Avengers were at least able to rest assured that the iteration of Ultron who joined their ranks was able to keep greater tabs on its counterpart than any of them could.

Marvel Knights: The World to Come is putting the Black Panther on a collision course with the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and he can't avoid it.
The presence of Ultron on the West Coast Avengers' lineup has caused a great deal of discomfort for both individual members of the team and entirely different Avengers rosters. On top of Ultron being a major sticking point for Firestar, who was still reeling from her time working inside Orchis as a double-agent, the fact that the West Coast Avengers had opened their ranks up to any version of the villain drew the direct attention of the mainline Avengers. Fortunately, Iron Man was able to avoid any serious fallout with his other teammates, even if the complex nature of the situation makes their concerns all the more valid.
