The following contains major spoilers for Hellverine #4, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
A key moment Wolverine wishes he could forget is now haunting the very same son he killed.
Following a brutal encounter with his own possessed mother, Itsu, the titular mutant antihero of Hellverine #4 comes to realize that it isn't just this one dark chapter of his past that Mephisto has been manipulating. Instead, the demon has been making his way down the long list of destruction and deaths that Akihiro left in the wake of his numerous lifetimes. The next of these brings Akihiro all the way to the former mutant nation of Genosha, now Gigosha, where the water itself has seemingly been behind a string of gruesome, untimely demises. As shocking as that might seem, Akihiro knows exactly how lethal these waters can be, especially since they all run through the same gutter where his very own father drowned him so many years ago.

Akihiro's death in Genosha took place in the pages of 2012's Uncanny X-Force #34 by Rick Remender and Phil Noto. At the time, Akihiro was still operating under the mantle of Daken, as well as working alongside the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Over the course of several months, Daken orchestrated a convoluted plot that would have destroyed Wolverine's reputation completely. Fortunately, the heroes were ultimately able to put a stop to the villains' plans, though it took Wolverine drowning his own son to truly bring about an end to the horrors at hand.
In the months that followed, Daken would be resurrected by the Apocalpyse Twins, though he wouldn't stick around for long as a member of their Horsemen. Instead, Daken ended up joining forces with his fellow Wolverines off-and-on for several years, frequently shifting back and forth across the line between hero and villain. Throughout the Krakoan Era, Daken even came to terms with his past and his complicated family, leaving behind the name Romulus had given him and trading it in for the name his father had given him so many years prior.
