Following recent comments by Ryan Reynolds about developing a new “ensemble” film, speculation quickly arose that he might be working on a new Deadpool movie.
However, Rob Liefeld, co-creator of the Deadpool comics, clarified on social media that Reynolds’ current project is actually Boy Band, a decidedly non-Marvel film. Reynolds is collaborating with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy and co-star Hugh Jackman on this project, which focuses on former band members reuniting later in life. Reynolds has mentioned having “pitches and ideas” for Deadpool but emphasized that none currently center on the character. He also stated that the future of Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is ultimately in the hands of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and executive Lou D’Esposito.
Gentle reminder that he is writing a movie called “Boy Band” https://t.co/vwKIKgo77Q

Rob Liefeld has publicly criticized Marvel’s treatment of comic book creators, noting that Feige does not treat them well and that he was excluded from certain events related to Deadpool & Wolverine. Despite this tension, Liefeld’s characters remain important to Marvel’s film projects. Rumors continue to circulate about Reynolds and Hugh Jackman returning as Deadpool and Wolverine respectively in the 2026 film Avengers: Doomsday, but no official confirmation has been made. Reynolds has expressed that while he is open to Deadpool appearing in future Marvel films, he does not believe the character should join established teams like the Avengers or the X-Men, saying, “If he becomes either, we’re at the end.” He also described Deadpool as a “fanboy” whose enthusiasm to be part of a team is an endearing trait.
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, which has increased anticipation for the character’s next MCU appearance. However, as of now, no official announcements have been made regarding Deadpool’s future in the MCU.
