Of the five years I have attended so far, San Diego Comic-Con International 2024 was a nice mix of indie and alternative cartoonists and creators as another option to Marvel and DC comics/cosplay/merch and Hollywood movie panels. And this is the first year I attended more than a day (Thursday to Saturday), so I got a chance to attend some panels and award ceremonies. On Thursday, there were panels on Harvey Kurtzman and Jack C. Harris interviewed by Mark Evanier with the focus on Harris' recollections of working with Steve Ditko. On Friday, there was the Eisner Hall of Fame Induction ceremony in the morning with Gary Groth, Kim Deitch and Lynn Varley, among others receiving their trophies, a panel with Scott and Amanda Dunbier announcing that they will become publishers of Artist's Editions with their new company Act IV, a Joe Matt panel with Matt Groening, Sammy Harkham and Brian Doherty and then the 2024 Eisner Awards in the evening. On Saturday, there were panels for Giant Robot with the founders and early contributors, moderated by Tom Devlin and a Daniel Clowes interview with Gary Groth. It was really nice to get to talk to a vast range of cartoonists who I have read over the years and to see them mingle with each other for the first time, like Amanda Conner and Jaime Hernandez!
