“Blood of Innocence – Chapter 04”

She lives! But how?! Bly opens her eyes and looks down at the large wooden stake protruding from her chest. A bright glowing light surrounds the sandy desert terrain in which she lies. To her left, a large hawk perches close by, staring directly into her bloodshot eyes. Then it speaks to Bly Pharis in plain English.

“Rise up!” the bird encourages in a raspy voice.

Just hours earlier, Bly and her friends were fighting off a pack of vampire biker gangbangers in the foothills of the Superstition Mountains. Now the midday sun shines brightly down on her wounded body. She slowly sits up and pulls the wooden weapon from her torso. What the hell had she become?

Elsewhere, Lieutenant Bellamy and Special Agent Connie race towards the mountains in pursuit of Javier Montero, a suspected serial killer who tricked his way into an active police crime scene. Was the man responsible for the murder of professors Theodore and Alisea Pharis? And what about that weirdo swinging the barbarian sword in the Phoenix mall parking lot? Are the two men connected? Bellamy and Connie are about to find out!

Reviewer Notes

I have to say, I’m thoroughly enjoying this series so far. Even though I’m sure Scarlett is set on an alternate Earth rather than the main DC Comics universe, writer Tom Joyner has created a very robust world of horror monsters so far. I was hoping this would tie in somehow to the Scare Tactics series that would release a few years later. Unfortunately, I don’t see any evidence as of book three.

In any case, I give this issue four out of five stars. If you are looking for some vintage alternatives to the standard Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman titles, definitely check out Scarlett. It’s a blast.
