Paramount Pictures is shaking up its summer release calendar, moving Scary Movie to open earlier than planned after its first trailer sparked online buzz. The comedy reboot, once titled Scary Movie 6, will now hit theaters on June 5, 2026. The film was originally set for June 12, the same weekend as Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day. The new date puts it up against Amazon MGM’s Masters of the Universe instead.
The shift signals confidence from Paramount and its partner Skydance as they aim to revive broad, crowd-pleasing comedies in a market still dominated by superhero and horror franchises. “We’re gonna do what we always do. We’re gonna make fun of everybody because we’re equal opportunity offenders,” said co-creator Marlon Wayans. He described the team’s approach as rooted in family humor and a willingness to push boundaries while still making audiences laugh at themselves.
Scary Movie is the first entry in the franchise in 13 years. The last film, Scary Movie 5, came out in 2013. The original 2000 hit helped launch a wave of parody films and turned its creators into comedy powerhouses. The new trailer, which premiered before screenings of Scream 7, pokes fun at modern horror titles like The Substance, Terrifier, M3GAN, and the recent Halloween reboot, along with the latest Scream films.
SCARY MOVIE 6 Official Trailer (2026)
The film reunites Marlon and Shawn Wayans with several key cast members. Anna Faris returns as Cindy Campbell, joined by Regina Hall as Brenda Meeks, who appeared in every film except Scary Movie 5. Dave Sheridan, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, and Lochlyn Munro also reprise their roles. New cast members include Heidi Gardner of Saturday Night Live, Olivia Rose Keegan from Gotham Knights, Sydney Park of The Walking Dead, and Damon Wayans Jr. from New Girl.
Paramount and Skydance plan to use Scary Movie and Jackass 5 as cornerstones of their summer comedy lineup. The studios scored a surprise hit in 2025 with a reboot of The Naked Gun, which earned $102 million worldwide and strong audience reviews. The success showed that well-made comedies could still draw theater crowds despite streaming competition. For the first time since Scary Movie 2 opened on July 4, 2001, the franchise will test its box office power in the heart of summer. With major releases like Masters of the Universe, Disclosure Day, Toy Story 5, and Supergirl crowding the calendar, Scary Movie will need laughs—and timing—to hold its ground.
