His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.
With the astonishing success of Absolute Batman and the rest of the Absolute Universe, Scott Snyder has proven himself to be DC Comics' golden boy as of late. Of course, he has not written exclusively for the publishing giant, having released Wytches through Image Comics, for instance.
In fact, before his DC days, Snyder made his debut writing superhero fiction for its biggest competitor, Marvel. Before making his big, groundbreaking comeback to DC, the author came close to making himself at home at the other side of the pond, as he recently revealed.
Scott Snyder Nearly Returned To Marvel
As a recent guest on the AIPT Comics Podcast, Scott Snyder was asked about the most prevalent topic in his career lately: the Absolute Universe. During the conversation, he revealed that, while DC was his first choice to launch what would become a smash hit imprint, he almost took his business to Marvel Comics.
He explains that, after focusing on creator-owned efforts like Nocterra and Dark Spaces, he pitched his idea for the All In initiative and the Absolute Universe to DC, only to be told it would need further consideration. Snyder transparently shared that he would pursue getting something off the ground at Marvel instead, which they were politely accepting of.
However, Snyder's pitch for an editorial initiative that "wasn't Absolute," while warmly received by Marvel, was not greenlit due to the company "not having a spot" for him at the time. He was offered the chance to take over an unnamed series, but he admits he "just wanted to do more than that."
Thankfully, more is what he ultimately got when DC said they were all in for his All In initiative and his vision for the Absolute Universe, both of which were approved in 2022. After two years of development, the line was launched with the release of Absolute Batman, Absolute Superman, and Absolute Wonder Woman, and the rest is history.
Scott Snyder Was On A Mission To Revive Superhero Comics
Image via DCScott Snyder also reveals on the AIPT Comics Podcast further insight into his inspiration for the All In initiative and the Absolute Universe. He says that it was bred from a personal frustration with what he believed superhero stories had become in recent years.
"I was really mad," he said. "There was this conversation that superheroes were finished... I was really on a mission when I was coming back to superhero comics.”
Snyder recalls having conversations with his longtime friend and collaborator Joshua Williamson about the bold takes on superhero fiction that he believed they could bring to the table. This would ultimately lead to the creation of the Absolute Universe, which the two writers would launch together by co-authoring the DC All In Special #1 in 2024.
The Absolute Universe, a reality created by Darkseid that reinterprets classic DC heroes without their signature advantages, has since expanded into a bona fide phenomenon that has practically revolutionized the comic books for modern audiences. Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta's Absolute Batman has been credited with helping boost sales in other corners of the industry, including by Image Comics COO Robert Kirkman.
In fact, an Absolute Batman animated series is currently in the works with Snyder serving as showrunner and Dragotta executive producing. The imprint recently added titles like Absolute Green Arrow and Absolute Catwoman into the mix, and Snyder has also teased an upcoming major crossover event that will bring all the timeline's main heroes together.
