When adapting any piece of fiction for the screen, establishing a good balance between staying faithful and taking liberties to keep the story fresh is crucial. Thus, one can only imagine what Scott Snyder is going through as showrunner for the upcoming Absolute Batman animated series.
A comic book as beloved as Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta's smash hit deserves to have its story honored when it makes its transition from the pages of DC's Absolute imprint. Luckily, the author has a vision for the highly anticipated TV show in mind.
Absolute Batman Animated Series To Go "Bigger And Better"
During his recent appearance on the AIPT Comics Podcast, obviously, there was time set aside for Scott Snyder to discuss Absolute Batman. In fact, the acclaimed comic book writer was able to provide an update on the development of the animated Absolute Batman series, which was announced in late June at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.
Snyder mentions that he and Nick Dragotta, who also serves as an executive producer, have already begun working on the project by mapping out the series' general structure. He also assures that one thing about Absolute Batman that will remain a staple of its adaptation is the look.
"We want it to be as though the comic is just almost a bigger, better, more robust version of the comic on the screen... It really looks like the comic book come to life three-dimensionally in the coolest way."
In other words, the distinct visual style that has come to define the mega-popular comic book series since its 2024 debut will not be sacrificed for the television series to appear more realistic. It will instead bring Dragotta's dark, sometimes bizarre vision for Gotham City in the Absolute Universe to life.
That means that fans can expect to see Absolute Batman in his larger-than-life physical frame, Absolute Two-Face with his blue other half, and Absolute Joker's demonic true form, just as they see in the comic, but animated before their very eyes. However, while the aesthetic will remain the same, the storytelling is somewhat subject to change.
Absolute Batman Comic Serves As The Animated Series' Blueprint

In fact, he is actually very enthusiastic about how this medium will allow him and others involved in the Absolute Batman animated series to make some unique amendments to the story.
"A giant moment in a comic is a splash," the author explains on the AIPT Comics Podcast. "When you’re writing animation, a giant moment… can be two seconds."
Snyder also adds that he is "trying to be really cognizant" about storytelling methods that work best in animation, in contrast to the strengths of a comic book, especially in terms of tone. He mentions that the animated series will grant him the opportunity to enhance the emotional resonance of some of the most iconic Absolute Batman moments so far.
The writer also takes time to show his appreciation for Warner Bros. Animation's Peter Girardi and DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. Snyder assures that they have worked hard to make sure that he and Dragotta are heavily involved in the creation of the series.
Absolute Batman takes place in Darkseid-created Absolute Universe, which reimagines classic DC characters without their traditional advantages, giving most of the power to the heroes' enemies. For instance, in this continuity, Bruce Wayne is not a wealthy heir, but a working-class construction engineer who must rely on his own intellect and allies, including secret agent Alfred Pennyworth and Red Hood Gang leader Harley Quinn, to protect Gotham City from corruptive forces hiding in plain sight.
The Absolute Batman animated series does not have a set premiere date yet.
