Skaar: Son of Hulk #11-12 (2009): Planet Skaar (2009)

This story picks up right after Skaar: Son of Hulk #10, where Skaar’s mommy threw him through a portal that led to Earth.

The story begins with a “Prologue” one-shot where a waitress who looks like Velma from Scooby Doo gets Bruce Banner mad when she won’t give him ketchup.

Unfortunately, that’s the best part of this story.

Banner didn’t Hulk out over ketchup. It was because he has some kind of gamma sense that tells him that his son is coming. She-Hulk feels the coming presence as well, and she and the Fantastic Four rush to the portal–and also to stop Hulk from reaching it because they are concerned it will turn him back into being the “Worldbreaker.” Norman Osborn is alerted as well, by Doctor Waynesboro, who is able to access the “Old Power.”

After the obligatory short fights, Osborn drops bombs on Skaar, which, rather than kill him, turn him into his non-Hulk form.

The story then advances to issue #11 of Skaar’s own series. The various teams from the Prologue all try to find Skaar. Hulk arrives first, and the two of them go at it–with Skaar vowing to kill his father once and for all. But he’s unable to get Hulk mad enough to become “World Breaker,” and Hulk leaps away–bored.

Unfortunately, I kind of am bored too. Nothing is really happening here. Except that with issue #13, the title of the series changes, dropping “Skaar” to just be titled, “Son of Hulk.”

Skaar realizes he can’t kill “moron” Hulk and goes back to his home planet.

That’s it.

You can’t name a story after a huge, sales-breaking, character-redefining event (Planet Hulk) and do something as anticlimactic as this.
