Sony announced a film adaptation of the comic series Love Everlasting, created by Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King. From screenwriter Jane Goldman, the film adaptation will be directed by Lenny Abrahamson and produced by Emma Watts and Ed Guiney.

King took to Instagram to share the big news, writing, “Big, best news: Love Everlasting is going to be a movie—a damn good movie—coming out from @sonypictures!!”

“Holy sh*t,” he continues. “Been working on this for a while now. Couldn’t be more excited for what this team is making. The talent here is mind-blowing. @elsacharretier and I created this bizarre, genre-bending, beautiful series during the pandemic not sure if anyone would get it. Grateful to you all for taking the risk and the journey with us. Can’t wait for you to see what’s coming next.”

This is another film adaptation for King. His work inspired Marvel Studios’ WandaVision, and he is also the co-creator of Max’s The Lanterns series, which is expected to premiere in early 2026.

Love Everlasting is an ongoing Image Comics series by writer Tom King and artist Elsa Charretier. The series is a mix of romance and psychological horror, which Deadline summarizes as “a mix of Groundhog Day and Quantum Leap with sci-fi and horror elements.”

The comic follows Joan, a damsel in distress trope, who isn’t entirely sure of where she is or when events are happening. As the series progresses, King questions and challenges gender roles and traditions in very interesting ways.

Deadline describes the plot as, “The protagonist is Joan Peterson, a heroine who begins in the mold of how women often are portrayed in romance comics: with the major goal to fall in love. Only here, each time she reaches that plateau, Joan finds herself abruptly shifted into a new time period and setting with new obstacles and the task of overcoming them to fall in love with a different man. Finally, she begins to question what she wants out of her life and tries to figure out a way to take control of her own destiny, one that doesn’t necessarily require the love of a man to complete her.”

Abrahamson is known for his past directorial work on Room, starring Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson and based on the bestselling novel of the same name, and Frank. Meanwhile, screenwriter Goldman’s writing has been a hit with fans on other comic book adaptations, including the Kingsman film series, Kick-Ass, and X-Men: First Class.

There is no news on the casting of the film.
