When People sat down with Superman actor David Corenswet, they found more than just a rising actor - they met a grounded family man who's every bit as down-to-earth as the hero he's set to portray. According to the cover story, Corenswet, 31, is a "humble married dad who tells 'terrible' jokes and likes DIY projects," as reported by People.com.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Corenswet is a Juilliard graduate who first captured attention in Ryan Murphy's The Politician and later in Netflix's Hollywood. He recently appeared in Twisters and emerged from a competitive audition process to claim the Superman role, beating out several notable contenders. Director James Gunn praised him for having "all the charm and muscles a Superman needs," as well as a balance of dramatic range, humor, and physicality.
While his star rises in Hollywood, Corenswet remains firmly rooted in his personal life. He married his wife Julia in March 2023 during an interfaith ceremony in New Orleans. Shortly after filming began on Superman, the couple welcomed their first child. "Two big unknown things at the same time," he told People, "and they were both great things." Corenswet said he always felt like a dad at heart and that fatherhood came naturally. He lovingly credits his own father - who was the primary caregiver in his early years - as a strong influence. As for his sense of humor, Corenswet freely admits, "I have terrible jokes that nobody laughs at."
Off screen, Corenswet is hands-on with home projects. He says he's "getting better" at changing light fixtures, tackling drywall, and even handling plumbing. It's a quiet contrast to his superhero role, but it reflects the same discipline and care he brings to his work.
Physically, Corenswet evokes Christopher Reeve - not just in stature, both standing at 6'4", but in his classical training and measured approach to the character. Gunn appreciated his analytical style and his ability to play Superman with both strength and heart. Corenswet also had a chance encounter with Will Reeve, Christopher Reeve’s son, who offered kind words and encouragement. Corenswet called Will "a very sweet and positive guy," grateful for the support even if Will didn’t view himself as an official gatekeeper of the Superman legacy.
Directed by James Gunn, Superman is set to release on July 11, 2025, with Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. For Corenswet, the cape comes with high expectations and massive legacy - but his humility, dedication, and love for family suggest he's more than ready to carry the mantle.
