While the rest of the world is still reeling from Firestorm's sudden rampage in the pages of The Fury of Firestorm #4 (by Jeff Lemire, Rafael de Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo, and Lucas Gattoni), Lorraine Reilly, better known as Firehawk, is learning all about why that rampage took place from none other than Professor Martin Stein. Worse still, she also learns that Firestorm, much like the Doom Patrol, Metal Men, and Metallo, all arose from the clandestine efforts of the infamous Supermen Project.

The Superman Project, Explained
Rather than being a single, unified effort, the Supermen Project was carried out as a series of clandestine experiments by some of the world's leading scientists. At the behest of the United States Government, the likes of Niles Caulder, Will Magnus, and Simon Stagg created members of the Doom Patrol, the Metal Men, and Metamorpho, all of whom gained their powers under pretenses in the hopes of crafting malleable powerhouses akin to Captain Atom.
The Supermen Project itself was first hinted at during the Doomsday Clock event back in 2017, and stood as a larger, arguably darker iteration of Flashpoint's Project Superman. In the time since then, the number of characters who have personal ties to the Superman Project has come to include numerous iconic heroes, not to mention villains such as Man-Bat, Lady Clayface, and Killer Frost.
At the outset of The Fury of Firestorm, the titular hero descends upon the sleepy town of Bedford, Colorado, before unleashing his powers upon it with no regard for those who call it their home. In a matter of moments, Firestorm transformed Bedford and its residents into glassy shadows of their former selves, all without ever revealing what was driving this crusade of horror.
As Professor Martin Stein has recently revealed, this rampage isn't being carried out by Ronnie Raymond, but by the Firestorm Matrix itself, which has somehow attained its own form of sentience since Ronnie and Martin were suddenly separated from one another. After being separated from one another, Ronnie attempted to continue as Firestorm on his own. Unfortunately, without a second consciousness to maintain control over the impossible power at the heart of the Firestorm Matrix, Ronnie has been completely lost to the powers that fueled him for so many years.
