Her latest move pushes into familiar territory with a modern spin on classic horror. According to Deadline, Sweeney is officially moving forward with Hollow, a new adaptation inspired by Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The project comes from filmmaker Lindsey Anderson Beer, who will both write and direct the film.
Hollow is scheduled for release in fall 2027. Instead of retelling the original story beat for beat, the new version shifts focus to Katrina Van Tassel. The character is no longer framed as a prize for competing men. She becomes the center of a mystery tied to a supernatural love triangle. The story blends gothic themes with psychological tension and modern thriller elements.
Irving’s original tale followed schoolteacher Ichabod Crane as he arrived in Sleepy Hollow and became entangled in the legend of the Headless Horseman. Katrina Van Tassel and local rival Brom Bones drove much of the tension. Crane’s sudden disappearance after a night encounter with the Horseman left the story open to interpretation.
Hollywood has revisited the story many times. Disney adapted it in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Jeff Goldblum led a 1980 television version. Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci, remains the most recognized film take. Fox also brought the concept to television with Sleepy Hollow, which ran for four seasons and placed Crane in a modern setting.
Sweeney’s version signals a clear shift in how studios approach familiar material. Instead of repeating the same structure, Hollow aims to reframe a known story through a different lens. That approach has become common as studios try to balance recognizable brands with new angles that can draw younger audiences.
