The Avengers have made history with the recruitment of a powerful but underrated hero thirty-six years after his comic book debut. Craig Hollis/Mister Immortal joined Steve Rogers' Avengers Emergency Response Squad in the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Astonishing Avengers.
In Steve Orlando and Francesco Archidiacono's Astonishing Avengers Infinity Comic #12, Night Thrasher attempts to uncover the mystery behind a monolith that has popped up on Staten Island. He reaches out to two heroes, Mister Immortal and Marvel's God of Heroes, Hercules, whose unique abilities should render them invulnerable to whatever horrors they may unearth.

Astonishing Avengers Infinity Comic #12

Created by the acclaimed John Byrne, Mister Immortal first appeared in July 1989's The West Coast Avengers #46. Imbued with a powerful healing factor, Craig Hollis is a mutant with the power of immortality, allowing his body to regenerate from any injury. Completely rejected by death, it has been explained that his mutation is not of the Homo sapiens superior variety, characterized by the more familiar mutant subspecies who have taken the next step in evolution. Mister Immortal is instead a Homo sapiens supreme, the final step in human evolution, evolving beyond death itself.
Craig assumes his role in the Avengers, having led the much-maligned Great Lakes Avengers, a team with no official affiliation to Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Given his immortality, his tenure on his new team could have record-setting ramifications. Marvel lore has Mister Immortal surviving until the end of the universe. Reed Richards and Susan Storm's spawn, Franklin Richards, is projected to survive into the next iteration of the universe, becoming its Galactus, with Mister Immortal serving as an alternative.
