Let the Easter Egg hunt begin!

Now that James Gunn’s Superman has roared into theaters, fans are running to see the first major DCU movie, and then lining up repeat viewings. The superhero feature got off to a record-breaking start on Thursday night, and is poised to have a very healthy opening weekend. And given that this movie expands the DCU significantly, die hards are combing the movie for clues as to what’s next… and what happened already.

During the Superman promotional tour, James Gunn revealed that the movie contains a mural that lays out the history of metahumans in the DCU. As we learn in the title cards for Superman, metahumans have been on our planet for 3,000 years. Superman (David Corenswet) has only been fighting crime for three years. Fans online have found the mural, and multiple people are chiming in on the classic DC heroes found in the illustration. Including one major Justice Leaguer.

Jay Garrick’s The Flash Is Part Of The Mural

DC fans who either grew up reading the comics or tuned in to the CW shows know that Jay Garrick was The Flash long before Barry Allen or Wally West. Garrick’s DC history dates back to 1940, and he has a very distinct look to his costume that separates him from other Scarlet Speedsters.

X user Macoy! posted a screen capture of the mural in Superman, and Jay Garrick’s appearance. The mural can be seen in the movie when Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) travels to the under-construction Hall of Justice to appeal to the Justice Gang to go rescue Superman from a pocket dimension. On first viewing, fans likely will be paying attention to Lois, Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) or Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) during the interaction. But the mural is evident in the background of the scene, and The Flash is evident, meaning he’s a big part of the DCU’s history.

James Gunn's Superman Will Feature an Iconic DC Location With Major Implications for the DCU

James Gunn recently confirmed the Hall of Justice will appear in Superman, paving the way for the Justice League in the DCU.

Likely, the Hall of Justice was occupied by other heroes over the years in Gunn’s DCU. ComicBookMovie is running a tally of other heroes in the mural that have been identified by fans, and so far, they have:

  • Wildcat
  • Super-Chief
  • Shining Knight
  • Silent Knight
  • Atomic Knight
  • Gunfire
  • Vibe
  • Dr. Fate
  • Alan Scott
  • Dolphin
  • Black Pirate

And more. This should come as no surprise, given the fact that James Gunn loves eccentric DC characters, and populated his own The Suicide Squad with weirdos like King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, Captain Boomerang, Javelin, and Weasel.

My favorite part about Superman is the amount of world building that James Gunn managed in the film, and how effortless it all feels. We meet significant DC characters like Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and The Engineer (Maria Gabriela de Faria). But they serve the story, and aren’t just present to tease out upcoming DC projects.

Superman 2? James Gunn Says He's 'Working On' a Sequel, But There's a Twist

James Gunn is plotting the next steps for Superman, but maybe not in the way fans would think.

There are other significant cameos in Superman that do tease out the next few DCU projects. But given the fact that I’m dying for Gunn to eventually build all of this toward a Justice League movie that includes the DC Trinity, seeing a hint of The Flash in this 2025 film gets me psyched.

Superman is playing in theaters as we speak, so grab tickets and go.
