Marvel Comics is celebrating the 70th anniversary of The Muppets with special new comic book variant covers.

The anniversary celebration includes incredible, never-before-seen artwork that pays homage to iconic Marvel moments. The publisher unveiled six of the special Muppets 70th Anniversary variant covers and announced that ten covers will be released in total. The artwork will see Kermit and the rest of the gang starring in select Marvel comic books released throughout October, with some of the publisher's top artists (including Greg Land, Luciano Vecchio and Annie Wu) creating crossover artwork that pays homage to some of the most iconic covers in Marvel history.

Marvel Unveils Iconic New Muppets Character Covers

Marvel's press release teased that The Muppets are masters of "the art of pop culture spoofs", and now the gang will put their own spin on classic moments, including Spider-Man's first appearance and the original Secret Wars. The Electric Mayhem are also set to assemble as Earth's Mightiest Heroes -- including Miss Piggy wielding the Infinity Gauntlet, naturally.

While Muppets fans will have to wait to see all ten of the covers, Marvel did tease their upcoming October release with six pieces of art. Amazing Spider-Man #13 sees Kermit as Thor, while The Electric Mayhem are the Avengers on Avengers #31's cover. The patriotic Sam Eagle is naturally in character as Captain America on Captain America #4, while Fozzie Bear is ready to clobber some villains as The Thing on Fantastic Four #4.

The shy Beaker and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew are terrifying Fozzie, Kermit and Miss Piggy on the cover of Incredible Hulk #30. Lastly, the Swedish Chef recreates the cover of 1982's Wolverine #1, with his wooden spoons making a nice substitute for the iconic member of the X-Men's claws.

The four other covers are expected to be unveiled at a later date, closer to when they go on sale in October. Marvel teased The Muppets' homage to the Marvel Universe as being "bursting with pure Muppets foolishness" and said the covers are "sure to be must-haves for Muppets fans and collectors alike".

The Muppets were created by Jim Henson in 1955 and are an ensemble cast of puppet characters that have launched their own hugely successful media franchise, spawning film, television, music and more. Over the years, The Muppets have had their own sketch comedy series, which earned four Primetime Emmy Award wins, as well as released several celebrated films, including The Muppet Movie and The Muppet Christmas Carol. They were acquired by the Walt Disney Company in 2004.

All ten of Marvel's Muppets Variant Covers are available for pre-order now at local comic shops and will release throughout October.
