Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

The following article contains spoilers for G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #330.

In the mid-1990s, the Tomb Raider video game series introduced the world to one of the most iconic female action protagonists in any medium, Lara Croft. Soon enough, the British archaeologist would transition beyond the gaming console, appearing in films, two animated series, and even comics.

Before starring in her own series, Croft's comic book debut was actually in a crossover with Top Cow Productions's Witchblade. How fitting that the Tomb Raider's next major appearance will also see her cross paths with a comic book series that was actually introduced as a different kind of franchise: G.I. Joe.

G.I. Joe x Tomb Raider Comes Fall 2026

Coming from Skybound Entertainment, a subsidiary of Image Comics, is a comic book series for everyone who grew up playing with manly action figures before discovering they liked their action heroes with a feminine touch when video games became their favorite pastime. Poised to be the crossover event of Fall 2026 is G.I. Joe x Tomb Raider.

This limited series will mark the first time that globe-trotting explorer Lara Croft, who was introduced in the first Tomb Raider video game in 1996, will enter the world of the multimedia franchise that began as a line of action figures modeled after the U.S. Armed Forces. However, her induction was already made official earlier this summer with the announcement of a Croft figure being added to the collection in honor of the character's 30th anniversary.

The plot of G.I. Joe x Tomb Raider is being kept largely under wraps for now, but it has been confirmed that the crossover will not take place in the Energon Universe, which is a franchise created by Robert Kirkman that crosses G.I. Joe with additional properties, namely Transformers, Void Rivals, M.A.S.K., and Rom. This new title will be an extension of writer Larry Hama's long-running G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero series.

Instead of Hama, however, handling writing duties for G.I. Joe x Tomb Raider is Kyle Higgins, who is also launching a comic book sequel to Escape from New York called Escape from Chicago in 2026. Illustrating the event is Elena Casagrande, who is best-known for her Eisner Award-winning work on Kelly Thompson's Black Widow run in the early 2020s.

The official announcement of G.I. Joe x Tomb Raider is almost coming prematurely. Reason being, Lara Croft's introduction to the continuity would only occur in the core comic's latest issue today.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #330 ends with the archaeologist emerging onto the scene, guns blazing. She then discovers that her intel's information regarding a wrecked shipping freighter from the G.I. Joe Universe called the Arbco Star was correct, and then sets out to locate its remains.

Lara Croft first made the transition from video games to other media when Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie portrayed her in director Simon West's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The 2001 blockbuster was followed by a direct sequel called Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life in 2003 and a reboot starring fellow Oscar winner Alicia Vikander that was released in 2018.

Hayley Atwell, known best for playing Agent Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, would later voice the title role of Netflix's animated series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which premiered in 2024. There is also a live-action Tomb Raider series with Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner in development at Amazon Studios.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #330 is now available where comic books are sold, and G.I. Joe x Tomb Raider hits the shelves Oct. 2026.
