Top Comics to Buy for March 12, 2025: Do you like good first issues?

1 month ago 18

There’s something really special about a good first issue, and in this week’s Top Comics to Buy for March 12, we’ve got three excellent series debuts. A good first issue has a lot of work to do. It has to introduce characters, a concept, and even an entire unique world — all while simultaneously incentivizing readers to continue on next month.

It’s not easy, but you wouldn’t know that from books like Assorted Crisis Events, Dark Pyramid, and Welcome to Twilight, all of which absolutely nail their debuts (and then some). You can find more about why I liked each issue below, along with my usual set of release lists and recommendations … enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for March 12

Assorted Crisis Events #1
Writer: Deniz Camp
Artist: Eric Zawadzki
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Publisher: Image Comics
Time is having a crisis. Mingling in the red-light district, you can find actual cavemen, medieval knights, and cyborg soldiers on leave from World War IV. Victorian debutantes amble their way into cell phone stores, confused and bewildered (what is a data plan?). On their way to work, bleary-eyed commuters get trapped in time-loops, assaulted by alternate-reality versions of themselves, and try to avoid post-apocalyptic wastelands. And LOOK: the 3:15 bus just took a wrong turn… into the neolithic era. Rising stars Deniz Camp and Eric Zawadzki and Eisner-winners Jordie Bellaire and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou are proud to present Assorted Crisis Events, an ongoing, zig-zagging anthology series about the compromised clicks of our clocks-full of one-shot stories both beautiful and ugly, tragic and redemptive, surreal and somehow all too familiar.
Why It’s Cool: Sean Dillon already wrote about this issue for our Wednesday Comics Reviews column, saying it is “going to be one of the best books of the year.” And I fully agree. This is an absolute stunner of a first issue, one with the potential to be the start of an era-defining Image comic. Don’t miss it.

Dark Pyramid #1
Writer: Paul Tobin
Artist: P.J. Holden
Colorist: Sara Colella
Letterer: Taylor Esposito
Publisher: Mad Cave Studios
Hooky Hidalgo, adventurist and popular live streamer, has gone missing while climbing Mt. Denali in Alaska! When his girlfriend, Becca, arrives at the base of the mountain to retrace his steps, she soon discovers something beyond the dreamy and impressive landscape. There’s a conspiracy deep within the heart of Denali itself—a dark pyramid, silent, waiting. Becca—and the scores of Hooky fans determined to either find him or find some fun—will face death, avalanches….and monsters to find the truth.
Why It’s Cool: Dark Pyramid launches a survivalist horror story with touches of commentary about influencers and social media, about living for the live stream. It’s a great mix of ingridients, all brought to life by fantastic artwork by the team of P.J. Holden and Sara Colella, with letters by Taylor Esposito. This is the type of first issue that had me letting out a big sigh when it ended, because I badly wanted to know what happens next.
Price: $4.99

Death of Copra #3
Creator: Michel Fiffe
Publisher: Image Comics
Ex-lovers from a different dimension plus ex-teammates from another world equals one objective: Kill COPRA. Throw in a few disgruntled assassins called in for one final mission, and you got yourself a full-blown reality-warping battle. All hands on deck as the countdown ticks away to the electrifying climax!
Why It’s Cool: Michel Fiffe is (unsurprisingly) delivering an awesome and fitting send-off for his long running, true indie comic series, Copra. There are “one last missions”, and complicated relationships, and reality-warping battles in play here. It’s everything you want from a grandiose comic book series finale.
Price: $3.99

Snotgirl #19
Writer: Bryan Lee O’Malley
Artist: Leslie Hung
Colorist: Rachael Cohen
Letterer: Iasmin Omar Ata
Publisher: Image Comics
“Weekend II,” Part 2 of 3. An unexpected ally makes Lottie’s weekend a little brighter. Meanwhile, back in LA, Virgil and Sunny have an encounter about which can surely be said, “Only in Snotgirl!”
Why It’s Cool: I’ve been loving these new Snotgirl issues, and this week’s is no exception. I won’t spoil anything that happens, but I will say this continues to feel like a book that is very much itself, and comfortable being itself, delivering character moments and plot developments that feel only possible for this specific comic. I’m loving it.
Price: $3.99

Welcome to Twilight #1
Writer: Matt Fraction
Story Plotting: Matt Fraction, Patton Oswalt, and Jordan Blum
Artist: Michael Allred
Colorist: Laura Allred
Letterer: Nate Piekos
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Twilight City may be home to the Minor Threats but they’re not the only down-on-their-luck super villains and heroes struggling to find their way. Comic book superstars Matt Fraction and Mike Allred reunite to tell a twisted noir tale about fame, dames and homunculus-faced mobsters in Minor Threats: Welcome to Twilight. Benjamin “Brock” Bronkowicz is a washed up, bird-winged actor who is not a superhero, but he once played one on TV. Now Brock spends his time on the superhero convention circuit-trying to cash in on his fleeting fame, drinking away his problems as he fades into obscurity. But a chance encounter with a mysterious woman empowers Brock to fight for a life he once thought was over. Can Brock learn to fly again? Or will his vices and the ruthless gangsters on his tail clip his wings for good?
Why It’s Cool: It’s Matt Fraction and Mike Allred teaming up for a noir story that also has commentary on the entertainment industry and some of the most twisted weirdo superhero ideas I’ve seen in a comic in some time. This is one of those essentially stand-alone first issues where the lead character goes through a nice arc that lands us at the start of a much bigger story. I loved it, and it was an easy choice for this week’s Top Comics to Buy for March 12.
