Top Comics to Buy for March 26, 2025: A 400K copy seller arrives

1 week ago 4

There is perhaps an obvious omission from the five recommendations in this week’s Top Comics to Buy for March 26 column —Batman #158: Hush 2. And the reason is, in large part, that I think readers already know if they’re going to buy this comic or not. I mean, shops have already pre-ordered a whopping 400,000-plus copies, and it also happens to be a sequel to one of the most-read Batman comics of all time.

We will, of course, have a full review of this marquee release in tomorrow’s DC Round-Up column, and, to be frank, I thought it was mostly just fine. This, however, is a packed week (the third in a row by my count), and so I’d rather recommend other titles here, titles some of our readers might otherwise miss. Which titles? Well, you can find those below, along with the usual set of release lists … enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for March 26

Absolute Martian Manhunter #1
Writer: Deniz Camp
Artist: Javier Rodriguez
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Publisher: DC Comics
Beyond Mars…beyond physical form…beyond Human Understanding…all that’s left is the ultimate alien: the Absolute Martian Manhunter!
Why It’s Cool:
This book is an example of perfect timing, featuring two of the most exciting things in periodical comics coming together at the same time — writer Deniz Camp and DC’s Absolute Comics. And if that weren’t enough, it features one of my favorite artists in superhero comics with Javier Rodriguez. I’ll have a full review of this one in tomorrow’s DC Round-Up column, but I’ll just say for now that it’s a must-buy.
Price:
$4.99

Falling In Love On The Path To Hell #7
Writer: Gerry Duggan
Artist: Garry Brown
Colorist: Chris O’Halloran
Letterer: Joe Sabino
Asami and MacRaith’s exploration of the island doesn’t go as planned when a terrifying new player emerges from the forest: this is the first appearance of the Butcher of Caledonia! He’s into rough stuff. As if the lovers’ lives weren’t hard enough. Mohan and his cultists are still trying to kill them, and the sabotage that prevents any escape from the island must be dealt with if they have any hope of leaving purgatory. Happy holidays from hell!
Why It’s Cool:
I wrote about Falling In Love on the Path to Hell Vol. 1when the trade came out earlier this year. I enjoy this series quite a bit, with its excellent execution and its unlikely mix of ingredients, and I thought this first issue of the new story arc was the best-looking comic in this series yet. It’s also a consequential chapter that seems like it’s setting up big action to come. Don’t miss out on this book.
Price:
$3.99

Free For All #1
Cartoonist: Patrick Horvath
Publisher: Oni Press
In the future, the World Finance League exists to benefit all, randomly choosing those from among the billionaires and trillionaires of the world and presenting them with a choice: either donate half of their assets to the common good-or defend them in ritual combat.
Why It’s Cool:
This 56-page self-contained one shot is from Patrick Horvath, who has quickly established his work as must-read over the past year or so. This book is no exception. It’s a great concept, better execution, and true example of how good an extra-long single issue one shot comic story can be. Don’t miss it.
Price:
$7.99

Ultimate Wolverine #3
Writer: Chris Condon
Artist: Alessandro Cappuccio
Colorist: Bryan Valenza
Letterer: Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
The Winter Soldier leads a strike against two members of the Opposition: Kitty Pryde and Gambit! But do the duo recognize the man behind the mask?
Why It’s Cool:
With Ultimate X-Men off doing its own, very-disconnected thing, it seems that Ultimate Wolverine is doing the work of incorporating the familiar X-Men characters into the new Ultimate Universe. All three issues of this title have been great so far, and it’s a credit to this book that Gambit showed up and it STILL didn’t effect my enjoyment of this comic. It’s just such a perfect blend of superhero action and suspenseful storytelling, and this issue ends on one hell of a cliffhanger.
Price:
$4.99

You’ll Do Bad Things #1
Writer: Tyler Boss
Artist: Adriano Turtulici
Lettering: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Publisher: Image Comics
It’s been ten years since the release of He Came in With a Smile, the true crime smash hit that chronicled the brutal murders committed by the Nursery Rhyme Killer. But in the decade since its release, its author Seth Holms hasn’t produced another title. He wants to write a story with a happy ending, but every time his fingers clack across the keyboard, it always ends in his character’s death. Worse yet? These tales of blood and barbarity that flow so freely from Seth’s mind are starting to happen in real life.
Why It’s Cool: I’m a big fan of stories/comics about writers, and that’s what we get here — a new book about a writer who no matter what he does, killers enter his stories and butcher his characters. What I was particuliarly impressed by in this one is the way it used comics art to blur the lines between realities, making the on-page murders feel and look real. It’s great stuff, and an easy pick for my favorite comics to buy for March 26.
