Trailer Watch: Dwayne Johnson’s ‘The Smashing Machine’

I have to admit, this is a different Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. After years of being heckled that he just plays The Rock in every film, Dwayne challenges his acting chops with the drama The Smashing Machine.  

The Smashing Machine is produced by A24 studios, which viewers may know for movies such as Heredity, Civil War, and Everything Everywhere All at Once. It’s about mixed-martial arts legend Mark Kerr, who fought in the early days of the UFC before Dana White and the Fertitta Brothers transformed it into the sports behemoth it is today.

If you weren’t alive in the 90s, the UFC was basically the Wild West, with no weight classes and few rules. The Smashing Machine seeks to capture that grittiness similar to the 2008 film, The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke. Hopefully The Smashing Machine has the same critical reaction as The Rock barely looks recognizable in this trailer.
