Warner Bros. has released the first full trailer for Mortal Kombat II, confirming that the long-awaited tournament will finally take place on the big screen. The sequel to the 2021 hit is set to arrive in theaters on May 8, giving fans what they have waited nearly five years to see. Karl Urban joins the cast as Johnny Cage, the Hollywood action star turned world-saving fighter.
The trailer delivers non-stop action cut to a new version of the franchise’s classic theme. It opens with Johnny Cage being pulled into the deadly tournament that will decide the fate of two worlds. Returning fighters Liu Kang, played by Ludi Lin, and Lord Raiden, played by Tadanobu Asano, show off their signature powers while new faces like Kitana, Baraka, and Shao Kahn make their presence known. Shao Kahn, played by Martyn Ford, is confirmed as the main villain threatening to destroy Earthrealm once and for all.

Director Simon McQuoid, who also directed the first film, is back behind the camera, with a script by Jeremy Slater. The ensemble cast includes Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and Hiroyuki Sanada returning as Scorpion. The film is produced by New Line Cinema, promising to raise the stakes with “more brutal glory” than before.
The 2021 Mortal Kombat launched a new era for the series but divided audiences, earning a 55% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many fans complained that the first movie skipped the actual tournament central to the games. The sequel now appears to correct that mistake while expanding the scope and intensity of the combat scenes.
Lead actor Lewis Tan, who plays Cole Young, said the team aimed higher this time. “It’s worse,” Tan admitted when describing the film’s violent tone, “but they are way more detailed and way more complex, which is what I wanted. It’s Mortal Kombat. We should have the best fight movie of the year. That has to be the goal. I think we accomplished that.”
Fans will see for themselves when Mortal Kombat II enters theaters this spring. Judging by the trailer’s scale and style, the battle for Earthrealm is only just beginning, and the trend for blood-soaked action movies is far from over.
