Transformers Kicks Off a Brand New Era With 2 All-Star Creators

5 days ago 6

Skybound's Transformers comic book series has been the highlight of its Energon Universe (the shared universe for Hasbro characters like the Transformers and G.I.Joe, along with the new characters introduced in the Void Rivals series that launched the Energon Universe), as the series (released through Image Comics) has been both a hot seller, AND a critically acclaimed series (landing in the Top 10 of CBR's Top Comics for both 2023 and 2024), but now, after an iconic two-year run on the series, the award-winning writer, Daniel Warren Johnson, is leaving the book, and he is being replaced by the superstar creator of The Walking Dead and Invincible (plus Void Rivals), Robert Kirkman, the head of Skybound himself!

Kirkman will be taking over writing duties on Transformers with October's Transformers #25, and he will be joined by the star artist, Dan Mora, one of the most popular comic book artists working in mainstream comics today. The acclaimed colorist and letterer on the series, Mike Spicer and Rus Wooton, will be remaining on the book, as well.

What does Robert Kirkman have to say about his new gig on Transformers?

Transformers #25 will not only be the debut of Kirkman and Mora on the series, but it will also be an over-sized issue that will serve as a perfect jumping-on point for new readers.

Kirkman talked about his excitement about taking over the series in a Skybound press release, "Holy smokes, I’m writing a TRANSFORMERS comic! I’ve been so invested in this series since the beginning. I’ve marveled at what Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona have brought to some of my all-time favorite characters. When Daniel’s run came to an end, I could stand on the sidelines no more! I just had to get in the ring! It’s a tremendous honor to be a small part of the legacy of these amazing characters. This world has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I can’t wait for everyone to see what the legendary Dan Mora and I are cooking up!”

The main cover for Transformers #25 will be by star cover artist, David Nakayama. Outgoing writer (and original artist on the series), Daniel Warren Johnson, will do a variant cover, as well, colored by Mike Spicer. Kael Ngu will be doing a 1:25 variant cover, and Jae Lee and June Chung will be doing a 1:100 variant cover. There are more variants planned (including a Jorge Corona 1:10 and a Dan Mora 1:50), but they have not been revealed just yet.

What does Dan Mora and Transformers editor Ben Abernathy have to say about the new creative team?

Skybound released three sample pages by Mora, showing Optimus Prime and Arcee interacting with a group of humans.

Mora discussed his new role in a Skybound press release, “I’ve been a huge TRANSFORMERS fan ever since I can remember, so it’s been a real thrill to come aboard the series with the equally thrilling Robert Kirkman. I’ve also been a huge fan of Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona, and what they’ve done on this title has literally been out of this world. Drawing my favorite Autobots and Decepticons brings me back to all of the fun I had playing with them as a kid, so I hope to add my own spark to their legacy and can’t wait for fans to see what Robert and I have been toying with for the Energon Universe next!”

Transformers editor (and Skybound Executive Editor) Ben Abernathy added, "Robert Kirkman and Dan Mora on TRANSFORMERS?! Talk about a dream come true! I think everyone's going to have their minds blown once they read what these two geniuses are cooking up!”

Transformers #25 will be released on October 9, 2025
