The following contains major spoilers for Ultimate Wolverine #3, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel's Ultimate Wolverine might finally be free of the Winter Soldier.

Ultimate Wolverine #3 opens to find a Eurasian task force being prepped for their next mission. Specifically, hunting down and eliminating the rebel forces being led by Remy LeBeau and Katherine Pryde. While ordinary soldiers might be able to hold their own for a time, only the Winter Soldier is capable of truly putting a stop to the threat these mutants pose to the Eurasian regime. Or rather, he would if Katherine didn't use her powers to reach into Logan's mind and set free all the memories his malevolent overlords have kept from him.

While Logan, better known as Wolverine, has been a Marvel Comics mainstay for decades, the latest Ultimate version of the character is a far cry from the one fans know best. Like his Earth-616 predecessor, the Logan of Earth-6160 wields unbreakable Adamantium claws and an impossibly powerful healing factor. Unfortunately, he is anything but a hero in this reality, as he was captured, tortured, and brainwashed into serving as the Winter Soldier of the Eurasian Republic, which itself is lorded over by a handful of malevolent mutants all working at the behest of the Maker.

The Eurasian Republic is just one of several major regions that the world of Earth-6160 was divided up by the villainous Reed Richards known as the Maker. After making his way to this newfound reality, the Maker used his knowledge of world events and the personal lives of various heroes and villains to effectively rewrite history as he saw fit. In doing so, the Maker ensured that there would be few, if any, heroes to oppose his reign, all while setting himself up to serve as the unseen supreme leader of a world whose populace would never have any idea of what was stolen from them.

Before the release of Ultimate Wolverine #1, fan-favorite scribe Chris Condon opened up about the series and landing the job of writing it. "When Wil Moss called me and asked me if I wanted to take on this title, I jumped at the chance and immediately had an idea of what to do with it," Condon said. "You might notice that there’s a Red Star on his costume, and you might wonder why. If you look at that mask, there’s a muzzle on him, and that’s because he’s wild."

Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180, where he battled the Jade Giant to a standstill, before joining Marvel's X-Men in 1975. Since then, the short-tempered berserker with unbreakable claws has proven himself as one of Marvel's most popular characters. The mutant hero was also the backbone of the X-Men film franchise, which ran from 2000 to 2020, and critics consider his solo film, Logan, one of the best superhero movies ever made.

Known as an unstoppable tank who can cut through anything, Wolverine isn't technically one of Marvel's most powerful heroes but he's one of the deadliest characters on their roster. Even villains like Magneto and the Juggernaut have learned to be wary of Wolverine's claws.
