War Machine #6 (2009)

1 week ago 12

Rhodey is on a mission to save Dr. Juliana Sandoval who, along with others, has been infected with the “Ultimo” virus, which turns the afflicted into super-powered killers. Ares is helping hold off the hordes of infected while Rhodey will soon go into organ failure due to the effects of his War Machine armor.

American Eagle tries to get Rhodey’s mom to talk to him and stop him from continuing to wear the suit. The result is a discussion between them and a series of flashbacks about Rhodey as a kid. They’re what you’d expect–he got bullied and treated poorly because he was black.

War Machine and his team show up, and while American Eagle is outside, Rhodey talks with his mom who reminds him that he’s always been a hero, even as a kid.

But why did he care if American Eagle was talking with his mom? Because it turns out, he stashed tech there. He fixes up his armor and then has an obligatory fight with American Eagle because…I really don’t know. It’s completely contrived. I think American Eagle is afraid that if Rhodey completes his mission there will be fallout for the local Native American tribes.

But it turns out, it wasn’t Rhodey in the suit fighting American Eagle, it was a member of Rhodey’s team–Parnell Jacobs.

The real War Machine is back in action, attacking the military base where he hopes to find the cure for the Ultimo virus.
