Nukoku, her previous selves, her current mask situation, and how masks work for devils in general feel like they’ve got a lot of good metaphor going for identity, and how much of it is imposed externally versus self-actualized (not to mention the trauma of losing it). I’m liking it.
At this point all Nukoku has for a “mask” are the fleshy unrecognizably-inflamed tendrils grown from the fragments of last one – an inextricable part of her, but which stab her in the face if she tries to “wear” them. Given what the term “masking” usually means to me in the context of being autistic and having had my own identity crises and regrowth, that hits a mark.
