William Shatner recently shared a serious health fight that hit close to home. The 95-year-old actor revealed he battled Stage 4 melanoma around the same time his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, was fighting Stage 4 breast cancer. In an interview with People, the father and daughter shared details about their diagnoses and recovery. Shatner said his daughter first discovered a lump in 2022 at age 60. Doctors later confirmed it was advanced breast cancer that had spread beyond the breast. About a year later, Shatner received his own diagnosis. “I went to an oncologist, and they operated almost immediately with Stage 4 melanoma,” he said. The disease is known for spreading quickly to other parts of the body, and survival rates were once grim. Medical advances have changed that outlook. New immunotherapy treatments help the immune system target cancer cells, and survival rates have improved over the past decade. The National Cancer Institute defines Stage 4 melanoma and breast cancer as diseases that have spread to distant organs, which makes early treatment critical.
