Authorities and emergency medical personnel were called to his home in Clearwater, Florida, at 9:51 a.m. for a cardiac arrest. First responders treated Hogan at his residence and then took him to Morton Plant Hospital. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Hogan was best known as a 12-time world champion in professional wrestling and was a major figure in the WWE’s rise during the 1980s. TMZ reported that Hogan was taken from his home by stretcher and placed into an ambulance before being transported to the hospital.
In the weeks before his death, Hogan’s health had been the subject of public speculation. Some rumors claimed he was seriously ill or in a coma. His wife, Sky, dismissed those reports, saying his heart was “strong” and he was recovering from a neck procedure.
Hogan played a major role in making WWE a leading name in wrestling entertainment, working closely with Vince McMahon during the company’s early years as the World Wrestling Federation. His impact on sports and television helped interest in pro wrestling reach new levels.
