Endangered Species began with a one-shot and then ran as eight-page back-up stories spread across the X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor and New X-Men titles. So this post covers parts of the following issues, which also have their own posts for the non-Endangered Species stories appearing in those books:
- E.D. One Shot
- New X-Men #40-42
- Uncanny X-Men #488-491
- X-Factor #21-24
- X-Men #200-204
Sigh. So unnecessarily complicated. And to top it off, it leads into another X-line event, “Messiah Complex”.
Endangered Species focuses on Hank McCoy as a geneticist, studying and trying to reverse the effects of Wanda’s “no more mutants” spell. To this end, he looks at the work of previous anti-mutant foes: High Evolutionary, Doctor Doom, Pandemic, Arnim Zola, Dr. Kavita Rao (who had been researching a cure for mutants way before M Day), the Weapon X facility, Mutant Growth Hormone dealers in District X, etc.
There’s lots of cool ideas introduced along the way. M-Day killed off tissue samples used by some of the researchers above. Alternate timelines with mutants have been erased. Mojo gets upset because no more mutants means lower ratings. Working with Dark Beast, they try re-create the X-gene using dead mutant tissue from Genosha. They even seek Doctor Strange’s help in reversing Wanda’s spell.
When all that fails, Beast finds Wanda Maximoff who has no memory of being Scarlet Witch.
For all the great ideas, this event ends in a standstill—no change.
