When Marvel introduced Wolverine into the dynamic of Giant-Sized X-Men #1, it forever changed the chemistry of team books, as the antihero emerged as one of the group’s most popular players. Now, a "new" Wolverine is emerging for Marvel's next major X-Men event.

Among the roster of murderous despots on the Marauders roster was one dastardly beast named John Greycrow, or more notoriously known as Scalphunter. An agent of the devilish Mister Sinister, Greycrow entered the mad geneticist's employ and served as one of his guinea pigs. A merciless warrior and weapons master, Greycrow served as the Marauders’ frontman and was responsible for many deaths.

The upcoming “DNX” crossover event will feature Greycrow more actively taking to the X-Men’s defense, as his relationship with Pyslocke becomes more intimate. The vacuum that Wolverine had left behind, as the group’s hard-edged brawler with a questionable moral compass, will be filled by John Greycrow, who will be turning his technopathic mutant abilities into the service of defending the X-Men’s headquarters.

Walking that fine line between light and dark and a provocatively violent nature gave rise to many of the antiheroes who would emerge in the 90s. The conflicts and debates over moral ambiguity led to a great deal of human drama and interpersonal dynamics across many of the era's publications. During the X-Men’s “Mutant Massacre” arc of the late 1980s, the Marauders terrorized the mutant community.

Over the course of several confrontations with the X-Men, Greycrow faced mortal injury but was cloned and resurrected to continue serving Sinister’s murderous vendetta. He eventually cut ties with the Marauders and went into hiding. Only recently has he resurfaced, and seeking some bit of redemption, he has aligned with his former enemies, appearing in the X-Men as part of the “From the Ashes” revamp.

Written by Jed MacKay with art by Netho Diaz, Greycrow became romantically linked with Pyslocke, who is a co-leader on the Alaska-based team of X-Men that is also chaired by Cyclops. With Wolverine an active participant in the parallel-running Uncanny X-Men title (which is written by Gail Simone), the role of the resident “antihero” has been filled, at least in the meantime.
