IO Interactive and PlayStation recently released a 36-minute gameplay trailer for IO Interactive’s upcoming game, 007: First Light. The game takes place in the James Bond universe and follows a young Bond as he begins building his reputation by tracking down another spy, operative numbered 009.
The trailer shows some of the cars players can drive and includes action scenes that display different ways to approach missions. The game looks like it belongs in the Bond series, but it also appears to need a LOT more development time. Frame rate problems suggest the game could be difficult to run smoothly on anything less than a high-end PC. Controlling an airship during a fight with unnamed enemies looks interesting, but could become frustrating if the frame rate slows down. There is also a long driving sequence in the trailer that feels drawn out. It is possible that the game will play better for users once released, but the trailer does not demonstrate this well.
Even so, IO Interactive has a strong track record. Their recent Hitman trilogy has earned praise, and the second half of the trailer shows a variety of ways players can handle different situations. If First Light can balance its sneaking and shooting mechanics like the trailer suggests, it could become a memorable game. However, confidence in the project would be higher if the release date were pushed back to 2027 for additional polish.
The game will also have a special “Legacy Edition” priced at $299.99. This edition includes the base game, the Deluxe DLC pack, the Gleaming Gadget Pack, a Golden Gun figurine, and a steel case. This package will appeal mostly to dedicated James Bond fans willing to pay a high price.
007: First Light is scheduled to launch on March 27, 2026, for Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2.
