An underrated DC supervillain is kicking of the next war for the future of the world — and it is already too late to stop him.
Batman/Superman: World's Finest #36 finds its eponymous duo enveloped in a harrowing set of circumstances taking place deep beneath the ocean's surface. At the moment, the kingdom of Atlantis and the armies of Tritonis are on the verge of all-out war. Even worse, the only reason either of them are fighting in the first place is because of the malevolent machinations of the Floronic Man, who has plans of his own for whatever remains of both kingdoms once the dust has settled.

The undersea city-state of Tritonis is one of two that comprises the primary strongholds of Atlantis. First introduced in the closing story from 1959's Superman #129, "The Girl in Superman's Past!" by Bill Finger and Wayne Boring, Tritonis was usually discussed in relatively hushed tones in its earliest days. This was due in large part to the prominence of Lori Lemaris, the current queen of Tritonis, who shared a fiery romance with the Man of Steel during much of her time living above the waters.
In the years that followed, Superman's relationship with Lori Lemaris continued to play a prominent part in various stories, although there was always something standing in the way of them ever attaining lasting happiness together. During one of their most memorable moments, Lori was wounded by an obsessed fisherman in search of a mermaid of his own. It was only thanks to the swift actions of Ronal, an alien or possibly Atlantean doctor in his earliest appearances, that Lori was saved. Since then, Ronal has been reimagined as the current warrior King of Tritonis, as well as Lori's doting husband.

Jason Woodrue, better known as the Floronic Man, has been a part of the wider DC Comics mythos since his debut all the way back in 1962's The Atom #1 by Gardner Fox and Gil Kane. While Woodrue has been involved in dozens of villainous plots over the years, he has enjoyed a renewed interest recently thanks to his recently concluded feud with Poison Ivy. As part of a convoluted plan to release deadly spores across the globe, the Floronic Man preyed on Ivy, only for her to sacrifice her own life in order to bring his scheme to an end.
