It has been nearly ten years since viewers last saw Tom Hiddleston, known for his roles in the MCU and James Bond adaptations, in a role of espionage and action in The Night Manager. Now, images from Season 2 of the spy thriller have been released, showing Hiddleston returning as Jonathan Pine.
Vanity Fair released these images, providing the first look at Hiddleston’s portrayal of Pine, a former military officer who became a hotel night manager and then a spy for British intelligence. The new season is set eight years after the first and includes Olivia Colman returning as MI6 intelligence officer Angela Burr. Burr recruits Pine to oppose an illegal arms-dealing operation.
The original season was adapted from John le Carré’s 1993 novel of the same name. Since there is no sequel to the novel, Season 2 will feature a new story. Simon Cornwell, le Carré’s son, is involved to guide the series forward and says the new season will continue exploring high-level corruption, similar to Season 1’s antagonist, arms dealer Richard “Dickie” Roper, played by Hugh Laurie.
Simon Cornwell said, “Forty years ago, people would write movies where the punchline was, ‘and the corruption goes all the way to the top!’ Today, that’s the starting point.”
Additional information reveals the new story finds Pine living under the name Alex Goodwin as a low-level MI6 officer leading a quiet surveillance team in London. However, an unexpected meeting with one of Roper’s former mercenaries pulls Pine into a dangerous mission involving Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos, played by Diego Calva. Pine also meets Roxana Bolaños, played by Camila Morrone, a businesswoman who cautiously assists Pine in infiltrating Dos Santos’s arms network.
Hiddleston noted that the decade-long gap between seasons has worked well for the character and the show. “I’m honestly excited that it’s taken 10 years—the last 10 years in the world have been interesting,” he said. “Jonathan Pine is 10 years older, a few more scars on the outside, a few more on the inside.”
Olivia Colman shared insight into her character Angela Burr, describing her as someone who had withdrawn to live quietly in the mountains to protect her family. Despite this, Burr gets drawn back into the dangerous world of espionage.
