There's amazing news for Jem and The Holograms fans. The hit 80s television series is gearing up for a surprising revival that promises to give fans a proper (and long overdue) finale.
It was recently revealed that BOOM! Studios would be releasing a special limited comic series with the intent of concluding the original cartoon storyline. The announcement was made during a recent BOOM! Studios presentation, which was covered on BlueSky by Alex Zalben. According to Zalben, BOOM! is working with Christy Marx, the original creator of the Jem television series, for the new story. Other details about the project — including when fans can expect to read it — were not made immediately available, but it is expected that the new series will debut sometime in 2026.
The 1980s Jem & The Holograms Finale Left Fans Wanting More
The original Jem and the Holograms series aired from 1985 to 1988, featuring 65 episodes across three seasons. Unfortunately, its final episode gave fans a sad farewell that tied up some storylines, but still ended on an open note. For decades now, fans have been eager to see what actually happened after the finale, especially when it came to unresolved portions of Jem's life, like her romantic future as well as the fate of Starlight Music.
Sadly, Jem's run in the 1980s was cut short due to high production costs and declining doll sales, despite the show remaining popular among fans at the time. Because of this, Marx intentionally left the story open-ended in the hopes that it would one day receive a revival. Considering Marx has been confirmed to be involved in the new Jem story from BOOM!, it seems likely that fans will finally have their burning questions answered, nearly four decades later.
Jem and The Holograms revolved around Jerrica Benton, the owner and manager of Starlight Music, while also exploring her alter-ego, Jem, the lead singer of the titular rock group. Episodes would often explore Jerrica's efforts to keep her two identities separate from each other as her band rises to fame and battles rival groups, all while caring for her sister and trying to navigate her own romantic interests.
Jem's New BOOM! Comics Promise a More Satisfying Conclusion Than Previous Releases
Image via IDWOver the years, Jem and The Holograms has become a pop culture classic thanks to its vibrant, glittery aesthetic that perfectly encapsulated the 80s. The television series was a collaboration between Hasbro, Sunbow Productions, and Marvel Productions (the team behind G.I. Joe and Transformers), and its animation was primarily handled by the Japanese studio Toei Animation (Dragon Ball), which is another key part of the franchise's on-screen legacy.
BOOM!'s new release doesn't mark Jem's first foray into comics, however. She has frequently appeared in comics released by Hasbro over the years, with IDW publishing a special Jem comic book in 2015 by Kelly Thompson. It offered a modern re-imagining of the series with new designs and a fresh look at the familiar story. The series ended in 2017, but a special one-shot followed in 2019 before the comic license to Jem and The Holograms transferred to BOOM! last year. Thankfully, for fans of the 80s classic, BOOM! seems much more intent on honoring the original cartoon's legacy rather than giving fans another modern reimagining.
More details about BOOM! Studios' Jem and the Holograms limited series is expected to follow in the coming months.
