Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder has confirmed the arrival of highly anticipated Batman villains and hinted at when exactly they'll arrive in one of the best modern Batman stories so far.
PopVerse reported that in a TikTok video shared by 2023tylerweld, Snyder teased the introduction of the Court of Owls in Absolute Batman. "They might appear in issue 17," the writer said, "very soon," when asked about when readers can expect to cross paths with Gotham's elite secret society once again.
Snyder serves as co-creator of the Court of Owls, who were first introduced in DC Comics' New 52 arc. Following their initial debut in DC Comics, the parliament of Gotham's elite families has continuously appeared in a few DC Comics-connected titles. Some have speculated that Matt Reeves may look to the Court of Owls to be his next major antagonist for The Batman - Part II, though no real confirmation has been given. Snyder also hasn't mentioned how the Court of Owls will make their introduction into the Absolute Universe, allowing fans tos speculate before Absolute Batman #17 arrives.
The Court of Owls can be viewed as Gotham's Illuminati, with DC Comics lore noting that they've controlled Gotham City for centuries. Described as ultra-violent, the Court of Owls has been feared for their financial and political stronghold over Gotham, and weaponizes its Talon assassins to ensure that nothing stands in their way. It was later discovered that the Court of Owls isn't alone in their villainy and is connected to a greater Parliament of Owls.
What To Expect From DC Comics' Absolute Universe Moving Forward
Image via DC ComicsAbsolute Batman has been praised for being one of the most fascinating and well-written Batman comics in years, and the same sentiment can be shared for DC Comics' Absolute Universe when looking at how the comics' lore has been reshaped for the modern day. Outside the Court of Owls, preparing to introduce themselves as a new threat, the Absolute Universe is continuing to craft team-ups across individual storylines. Absolute Wonder Woman #15 featured the universe's first major team-up — and hopefully, not the last.
After Wonder Woman traveled to Gotham City to seek out Batman's help, some have speculated that the seeds for an Absolute Justice League could have been planted. DC Comics reportedly sold 2.8 million units of Absolute Universe comics, with some data indicating that the new total teeters on 3 million sales. More iconic DC characters are expected to tap into the Absolute Universe, with Robin still expected to be on the way.
On the more antagonistic side, Poison Ivy will make her way into Absolute Batman in the same volume that the Court of Owls are all-but-confirmed to be featured in: Absolute Batman #17. Snyder previously teased that fans could look out for Scarecrow and Mr. Freeze to join Absolute Batman's gallery of rogues "in arc 2," with readers still anxiously awaiting their debut.
Absolute Batman is now available to read online and in print wherever comic books are sold.
