Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.
Many superheroes have a main base of operations, be it a fortress of solitude or even a cheap apartment, but Batman, arguably, has the absolute best. However, it appears that he will soon have to say goodbye to his headquarters.
In Batman #9, The Dark Knight will be forced to abandon the Batcave, as well as the many other underground hideouts he has established around Gotham City, according to the upcoming issue's official summary.
THE GCPD LAUNCHES AN ALL-OUT ASSAULT ON THE BAT-FAMILY! After making a sinister deal with Mayor Isley, Commissioner Vandal Savage initiates "Operation Peregrine", sending his brutal TUCO squads across Gotham City on a singular mission: bring in the Batman! Batman and his team must destroy and abandon their hideouts, safeguard their data, and escape the long arm of the law... but not everyone will make it safely through the night!
In writer Matt Fraction's iteration of Batman, Gotham's current mayor is Pamela "Poison Ivy" Isley and Jim Gordon's successor as police commissioner is the immortal Vandal Savage. The pair of villains-turned-city officials intend to smoke out as many members of the Bat-Family as possible, which is what leads Bruce Wayne to make the disheartening decision to see that the vigilante's main hub is no more.
The Batcave has been a staple of Batman's iconography since 1943, when it was first introduced in a radio serial based on the DC Comics character created four years earlier by writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane. Typically depicted as being located beneath Wayne Manor, it has taken on many forms since its inception, especially in live-action Batman movies like Batman Begins (envisioned as an Underground Railroad sanctuary) and 2022's The Batman (less an actual cave and more of an abandoned subway station).
It is truly a tragedy for fans to see Batman bid farewell to the Batcave, at least in this corner of the DC Multiverse. However, the person who is receiving the brunt of "Operation Peregrine" is another Bat-Family member.
Batgirl Faces Jail Time In Her Upcoming Spin-Off
Image via DC ComicsBatman #9 may be seeing the end of one long-cherished era for the Batcave. However, it will also launch the beginning of another for one of Batman's most trusted allies, Batgirl.
The issue will serve as a "backdoor pilot," so to speak, for a spin-off from Matt Fraction's Batman centered on the fellow Gotham City vigilante otherwise known as Barbara Gordon. Barbara Gordon: Breakout will be overseen by Canadian writer Mariko Tamaki, known for her 2021 graphic novel I am Not Starfire and other DC and Marvel titles, and artist Amancay Nahuelpan of Hawkgirl and Crush & Lobo fame.
The comic will follow the aftermath of "Operation Peregrine" from the perspective of Jim Gordon's daughter after she is sent to a prison specially designed for Vandal Savage's opposers, known as "Supermax." However, she will at least avoid having her vigilante identity exposed in the charade, having been arrested as Barbara Gordon on the charges of providing aid to the Bat-Family, according to the series' logline.
Barbara Gordon: Breakout is being released as part of the DC: Next Level line. The new initiative from the comic book publishing giant also includes highly-anticipated titles like the revival of Batman: Shadow of the Bat, a new Batwoman run by writer Greg Rucka and artist Dani, Skottie Young and Jorge Corona's new interpretation of Lobo, and plenty more.
Based on the title of Batgirl's new solo series, it seems that fans can expect to see her achieve freedom again sometime soon. Could that mean that they also have not seen the last of the Batcave in this continuity after all? Only time will tell.
Batman #9 hits the comic book store shelves and most digital platforms on May 6, and Barbara Gordon: Breakout #1 becomes available May 13.
