The following contains major spoilers for Black Lightning #5, on sale now from DC Comics.
An underrated DC superhero just garnered the highest praise that Batman could ever offer.
While the titular hero of Black Lightning #5 is busy taking on a small army alongside his youngest daughter Jennifer, better known as Lightning, his eldest daughter, Anissa, can only imagine what her family is facing. Due to the wildly unpredictable state of her powers, Anissa has been trapped within the confines of the Justice League Watchtower. Fortunately, she has come a long way from where she was just a few weeks ago thanks to the plethora of help and training she has received in that time. So much so, in fact, that even Batman can't help but acquiesce to her demands to be set free so that she can bring some Thunder into the fight.

Anissa Pierce, aka Thunder, made her comic book debut in the pages of 2003's Outsiders #1 by Judd Winick and Tom Raney. Although her father was long against the idea of her following in his footsteps as a superhero, Anissa was always set on doing exactly that. With her ability to manipulate her own density at will, Anissa is capable of throwing some of the heaviest-hitting strikes in the world, all while being almost completely impervious to harm for herself. This, coupled with years of hand-to-hand combat training and being a licensed medical practitioner, helped Anissa firmly cement her legacy as Thunder.
During the events of Absolute Power, which charted Amanda Waller's all-out war against the heroes of the DC Universe, Black Lightning and Thunder were among those who lost their powers to Waller's Amazo army. When the Amazos were defeated and the powers they stole set loose, not all of them were returned to their original owners. While Anissa did reclaim her original powers, she also picked up an explosive new set of abilities that she has only recently learned how to control.

Superman Is Turning His Back on His Own Motto for the Best Reason of All Time
The heir to one of the most destructive legacies in the DC Universe just convinced Superman to turn his back on everything he stands for.
In the immediate aftermath of Absolute Power, Anissa tried to keep the return of any of her powers, let alone her new electrically charged concussive blasts, completely under wraps. Unfortunately for her, it was only a matter of time before the truth came out, and with Anissa posing a danger to everyone around her, she was quarantined within the Justice League Watchtower. Although this didn't help smooth things over with her father or any of her fellow League members, it did give her plenty of time to come to terms with and understand her new powers.
